What do I wear to my legal meeting?

If this is your first time dipping your toes into the world of law, it can be a little intimidating to know how to present yourself. Luckily, Eunota is here to help you out! In essence, it all depends on what the meeting is about. If you are meeting with your lawyer, feel free to go as you are – they are working for you so you’re the boss! But it’s important that if you are meeting with other lawyers or are presenting yourself in front of a judge to dress appropriately. In the legal realm, it’s all about respect. Dress is important: think of the wigs and gowns! It’s a process that is highly regulated with lots of people working to help your case, so by dressing nicely, you show respect.

Universally accepted attire

Universally accepted colours include black, navy, gray, and white. These classics make it easy to put together an outfit that is appropriate for a legal meeting in Moncton or beyond. A classic look would be a navy blazer/sportscoat, white collared shirt, and black slacks with a polished pair of black leather shoes. Make sure that our outfit is free from wrinkles and stains. You can feel free to add a splash of colour somewhere in your outfit, but make sure that it is not distracting – the task at hand is to meet about a legal issue and it is important to present yourself in a serious manner.

For the ladies

Along with the universally accepted colours and styles mentioned above, women can also wear skirts so long as they go below the knee. You can even do a printed skirt so long as the colours are not too loud. This, paired with a nice heel would look great in the courtroom and help your confidence. I would advise against heels if you are not comfortable in them and rather go with a black leather bootie or flats – you want to feel comfortable and confident while presenting yourself in front of legal counsel.

For the lads

Generally, most men wear a sportscoat with collared shirt and nice dress pants. A black or brown leather shoe looks great too. Make sure to iron your outfit so it looks crisp and presentable. This will help you feel confident while you engage with counsel about legal matters. For discovery or a meeting with your lawyer, you can get away with just the collared shirt, but for court it’s better to look more put together with a sportscoat if possible.

Conclusions

Chances are that if you’re reading this, you’re new to the realm of law and are feeling a little unsure about it. By intentionally picking out an outfit that will fit in with those around you, you will feel more confident during your meeting. Legal matters can take a lot out of a person, so practice a little self care by taking time to make yourself look good. Book a manicure, get your hair cut, buy yourself a nice new shirt – just take some time to focus on you. In Moncton, some great stores to shop at include Banana Republic, R&W, and Winners.
